At approximately 4:35 p.m. on January 29, 2018, the City of White Rock and White Rock Fire Rescue responded to a mudslide on private property near the intersection of Martin Street and Victoria Avenue. As a precaution, the City evacuated people from four residences in the area. The slide occurred on private property, however with the potential for the slide to further expand, a geotechnical engineer was called in to assess the area. As of 4:15 p.m. on January 30, 2018, one of the residences to the south of where the slide occurred has been deemed safe, and those residents are able to return to their homes. The City hired a geotechnical engineer to design a temporary repair to address public safety issues at the mudslide site. These temporary repairs will start tomorrow. The next step is for the property owners and their insurance adjusters to hire professionals to design a permanent repair. It is expected that more will be known about the exact cause of the slide when this permanent repair is designed.
