[ARCHIVED] City of White Rock thanks small businesses during Small Business Week

City of White Rock waterfront and the White Rock

The City of White Rock is thanking small businesses during Small Business Week from Oct. 19 to 23 for the critical role they play in serving the White Rock community.

White Rock has more than 300 small businesses, in addition to home-based businesses. Each October, Small Business Week pays tribute to the entrepreneurs who bring energy, vibrancy and uniqueness to the city’s streets, forming the backbone of the economy.

The City works closely with the White Rock BIA and the South Surrey-White Rock Chamber of Commerce to provide support for local businesses, including during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Working with its partners, the City has:

  • Lobbied senior levels of government for help for White Rock businesses
  • Provided credits for patio licence fees
  • Delayed the due date for business licences
  • Expanded parking for takeout in response to business needs
  • Added picnic tables on the East Beach, Memorial Park and Five Corners to help residents and businesses
  • Formed the COVID-19 Recovery Task Force, including business owners, to respond quickly to social and economic needs.

Innovation and Creativity
White Rock businesses have been innovative and creative in offering services since the COVID-19 global pandemic was declared in March 2020.

Examples include taking a home boutique online and building a huge following on social media, moving from dine-in haute cuisine to delivering fried chicken. Restaurants have installed Plexiglass between diners, rented extra space to safely fit guests and offered menus online to keep diners safe.

Quotes

Mayor Darryl Walker

“The year 2020 has been an incredibly challenging time for businesses, including small businesses. It has also been absolutely thrilling to watch small businesses think differently, act differently and find new ways to serve the community. Thank you to our small business owners, operators and employees for continuing to offer excellent high-quality and unique services to our community. We are truly grateful for you.”

Carolyn Latzen
Economic Development Officer
City of White Rock

"White Rock is a community of small businesses, they are our heart and soul and are what makes White Rock such a wonderful place to shop and live. The best way we can show our appreciation is by visiting our small businesses and shopping local, especially during Small Business Week."
