[ARCHIVED] Poppy-like rose honouring military service will grow in White Rock

Liberty Rose

The Liberty Rose, created by acclaimed rose breeder Brad Jalbert of Langley, B.C. to honour those who have served, will brighten some White Rock streets starting this spring.

Declining roses on Johnston Road and near White Rock City Hall are being removed and the Liberty Rose, a hardy and vigorously growing shrub rose, will be planted starting later in March.

The rose, which resembles a poppy, was commissioned by William P.J. McCarthy who served with the Canadian Armed Forces. McCarthy searched for a rose hybrid to surround a light armoured vehicle monument in Mission, B.C., honouring those who defend Canada’s liberty.

Jalbert, owner of Select Roses, spent nearly a decade breeding a rose that was the perfect fit. Jalbert has hybridized 140 roses, including for Vogue’s 125th anniversary and for Hollywood star Bette Midler. Jalbert will host a rose maintenance session with the City’s gardening team.

The Liberty Rose

The Liberty Rose honours those who serve. This disease-free, landscape rose produces brilliant, single, poppy-red blooms. It is early to bloom and fast to rebloom.
