[ARCHIVED] Watch for fraudulent “phishing” emails, texts, and calls

Hands typing on laptop keyboard

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month and this year’s theme is “Fight Phishing”. Phishing is a type of scam in which a criminal emails, texts, or calls, pretending to be a person or organization you know to get you to reveal your sensitive information or send money. In fact, phishing is one of the biggest cyber threats Canadians are facing today.

Educate yourself to avoid falling prey to phishing scams. If you receive a suspicious message, follow these tips:

  • Do not click on any links or attachments
  • Do not reply to the message or forward it to anyone
  • Never send money or provide credit card or banking information unless you're certain of who you're giving it to

If you have been a victim of a scam or a fraud, report it to the White Rock RCMP non-emergency line at 778-593-3600.

Important note:

City staff or council members will never solicit monetary favours such as gift cards or payments for city services via email or social media. Official communication from staff and council members will also originate from email addresses with the @whiterockcity.ca domain.

If you receive a suspicious message claiming to be City Council or staff, you may confirm its authenticity by emailing communications@whiterockcity.ca
