[ARCHIVED] Celebrate World Oceans Day on June 8

White Rock Pier and ocean

World Oceans Day is a time to celebrate our beautiful waterfront and learn how to protect our oceans. On June 8, attend these local events and follow these tips to help our oceans.

1. Participate in the Shoreline Clean-up

June 8, 3 – 5 p.m.

Celebrate our oceans by participating in a shoreline clean-up with others who are doing their part. Tools and instruction provided. Bring water and gloves, and dress to get dirty. This event is for all ages and takes place at East Beach, White Rock (15322 White Rock Promenade). Meet at Memorial Park public washrooms (in front of pier).

Hosted by Birds Canada. Pre-register, email rtorrenta@birdscanada.org.

2. Learn more about the ocean at the World Oceans Day Lunch & Learn Webinar

June 8, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.

Learn more about World Oceans Day at the Alien Green Crab Destroyer Lunch & Learn Webinar. Find out how the invasive green crab is destroying our ocean ecosystem and what folks are doing about it in Boundary Bay, Drayton Harbor, Washington and Clayoquot Sound near Tofino.

Hosted by Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society. Register online.

3. Reduce single use plastic

Metro Vancouverites dispose of over one billion single-use items per year. That's 390 bags, straws, utensils, cups, and containers per person! Single-use items are used for a short time, but they have a lasting impact on our environment. Learn more about reducing-single use.

4. Put waste in its place

After spending a day at the waterfront, please put your waste in the waste sorting receptacles along the promenade, or take your litter home if there is overflow, and help keep our beaches clean.
