[ARCHIVED] No garbage and recycling collection changes this holiday season

gargabe waste recycle on curbside for pick-up

This holiday season, there are no collection changes for your garbage and recycling. Collection will be picked up on Tuesday, December 26. Please set out your collection by 8 a.m.

Consider these helpful tips to trim your holiday waste.:

  • Food isn't garbage! Eat or freeze your leftovers for later but if you must dispose of them. Food leftovers can be placed in your Green Waste containers or composted along with all fruit & veggie peelings, meat & bones, cheeses, congealed fats, and food soiled paper too greasy to recycle such as napkins, paper towel and pizza boxes.
  • Keep your container clean and smelling fresh. Use brown, kraft paper bags or newspaper to line your Green Waste container. Be sure to clean containers regularly as this can help prevent smells building up inside your container and keep other pests away. The City does not accept compostable or biodegradable plastic-like bags.
  • Ensure your containers are clearly marked and grouped separately by material type. Your waste is collected by 3 different drivers and taken to 3 different disposal facilities for garbage, compost, and recycling. Try placing recycling materials on one side of your driveway and garbage or green waste containers on the other.
  • Flatten and cut down cardboard boxes to fit into yellow bags. You can also bundle stacks of flattened cardboard less than 3’ in length (or it won’t fit our truck). Use box tape or masking tape to bundle it. You can also take excess cardboard to a Return-it depot or regional Recycling and Waste Centre.
  • Purchase garbage tags for extra bags of garbage. Please don’t overfill garbage containers, our collection staff will thank you. Lifting overweight solid waste containers is one of the leading causes of injury, please ensure containers weigh less than 50 lbs.
  • Please be patient. The holidays are a busy time and there can be long lines at recycling depots and waste facilities.
