[ARCHIVED] Burn Awareness Week, February 4 to 10, 2024

Fire Truck, White Rock Fire Rescue

It’s Burn Awareness Week, and White Rock Fire Rescue wants to raise awareness on how to prevent and address burns. Every year, Canadians experience burn and scald injuries, with our young children and elders being particularly vulnerable.

Prevent yourself and others from injury with these burn prevention tips:

  • Cooking oil is a highly flammable liquid. Keep your eyes on what you fry!
  • Grills and gas ranges produce a lot of heat; keep your cooking area clear when around an open flame.
  • All flammable liquid containers should be kept in cool, dry locations and stored away from the home.
  • Put fuel in lawnmowers, leaf blowers, snow blowers, and weed eaters when the engines are cool and in an open area outdoors.
  • Never use an accelerant such as gasoline, kerosene, or aerosol sprays to start a campfire.

In the event of a burn injury, treat a burn right away with cool water for 3 to 5 minutes and cover the area with a clean, dry cloth. If you need medical attention, call 911.
