Holidays are a wonderful time to make memories with your family. But make sure that you remember your holidays for all the right reasons. After all, nothing dampens the holiday spirit like a fire or other accident. With a few simple tips you can ensure that a safe and fun time is had by all.

Every year, thousands of people are treated in emergency rooms for serious injuries related to fireworks. Fireworks (sparklers and firecrackers included) are not toys.

Fireworks are illegal in White Rock. You cannot own, sell or light them without a permit.

The only safe way to view fireworks is to attend a professional show.

Don't get caught up in the holiday spirit - make sure your children trick-or-treat safely.

Halloween Safety Tips:

  • Skip houses that are not well-lit.
  • Have a flashlight or glowstick when trick-or-treating.
  • Wear bright or light coloured clothing so you are visible outside.
  • Only use battery operated candles (not real candles) in lanterns.
  • Keep all your exits and escape routes free of any decorations on the floor.
  • Check candy before allowing kids to eat it.

Winter holidays are a time to gather with family and friends, increasing the risk of home fires.

Holiday Safety Tips

  • Do not block stairways, entrances, or escape routes and keep decorations away from windows, doors and heat sources.
  • Do not overload extension cords or electrical outlets or use frayed or damaged cords.
  • Never use staplers to secure cords, or use indoor lights outdoors.
  • Ensure your tree doesn't lose needles (this means it is too dry and poses an increased fire hazard). Check the water level daily and use a tree stand that holds at least 1 gallon of water.
  • Keep tree away from heaters, fireplaces, candles, and other heat sources.
  • Turn off and unplug all holiday lights when you leave home or go to sleep.
