The East Beach promenade is now open to the public. After a devastating windstorm on December 20, 2018, the East Beach shoreline and promenade was extensively damaged and destroyed.
The East Beach restoration included the replacement of:
- picnic tables
- benches
- lawns
- irrigation
- walkway
- rip rap
- fencing
- drainage pipes
The new promenade will be asphalt with a stamped pattern and coloured surface to match the appearance of pavers and will allow for easier surface cleaning and maintenance. Finalization of the walkway stamping and painting will occur with localized closures next week.
During the restoration process, improvements were made to beach access points including:
- West of White Rock: Previous gently sloped ramps are restored.
- Cypress Street: A gradually sloped concrete walkway will be installed in July as part of the pedestrian railway project. This will be good access for those with mobility challenges.
- Ash Street (by Terry Parr Plaza): The existing concrete walkway is restored and is a suitable access point for those in beach wheelchairs or walkers.
- Finlay Street: Prior to the restoration, there was limited access at East Beach at the Finlay crossing. As part of the restoration, a wider stone path has been installed; however, this path is not appropriate for those with mobility challenges.
- East of Finlay Street at the end of Rip Rap Rock: Previously there was no access to the lawn area; however, we recently constructed a rock stairway. Unfortunately, this is not an access suitable for those with mobility challenges.
While the promenade is now open to the public, there will be additional work underway into July in order to fully restore the beach and complete all of the railway crossings. Continued public patience is appreciated as the last works for the project is completed.
