[ARCHIVED] City seeks public input to spend $7.78 million-plus on capital projects

2019-State-of-the-City

The City of White Rock will look for input from residents and businesses to determine how to spend from $7.78 up to $14 million in City capital funding.

The announcement was part of White Rock Mayor Darryl Walker’s State of the City Address, presented by the South Surrey and White Rock Chamber of Commerce at a business brunch on Nov. 6. Mayor Walker gave a second update at a free public event on Nov. 7 at the White Rock Community Centre.

Developers pay fees to cities like White Rock, such as development cost charges, to help with utilities like water, sewage and roads. They also pay community amenity contributions, which will be used for community-based capital projects, such as:

  • Updates to White Rock’s Pier
  • Affordable housing opportunities
  • Community Campus: administrative and public space
  • Waterfront parks
  • Park Improvements
  • McCaud Park Plan, Centre Street Walkway
  • Funicular
  • Theatre facility or convention centre with community access.

The City will be looking for public input starting Dec. 4 and will provide opportunities to get involved. Information will be posted on the City’s website at whiterockcity.ca.

State of the City Address

Mayor Walker shared the City of White Rock’s vision for the future and the successes and challenges of the past year, including rebuilding the City’s relationship with the Semiahmoo First Nation and the need to continue fundraising for the White Rock Pier.

Quotes

White Rock Mayor Darryl Walker

“There is no greater tribute to democracy than to engage the community in decision-making. That is very important to this Council. We want to, and need to, hear your voices.

I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues on City Council, with staff, engaging other levels of government, the Semiahmoo First Nation, businesses and residents.

Together, we make White Rock even better.”
