[ARCHIVED] Working Together During Winter Conditions

Sidewalk cleared of snow.

The City of White Rock and the community together can keep our roads and sidewalks safe.

Help Keep Sidewalks Clear

Residents and businesses are required to clear snow and ice from sidewalks surrounding their property by 10 a.m. following a snowfall, according to City Bylaw No. 1529 (PDF). Thank you for doing your part to be a good neighbour and for helping to keep our community safe.

The City’s Parks crew works to clear sidewalks and parking lots at civic facilities. Once those priority areas are clear, they tackle walkways in the City, like the promenade. Like our roads snow removal crew, in times of continuous snowfall, the Parks crew will return to clearing priority sidewalks and parking lots.

Help your neighbour

Give your neighbours a hand shoveling snow, especially if they are seniors or have limited mobility. Ask friends or neighbours for help if you are unable or will be away.

Clear catch basins

Help keep catch basins free of debris and snow, especially during melting conditions. Blocked catch basins may result in excess water along the road area when snow is melting. This could become dangerous if it freezes and may also result in flooding of nearby properties.

City Roads

The City manages more than 80 kilometres of roadways. White Rock City Crews begin by clearing and salting priority 1 routes, then move to 2 and 3. Once all priority routes are cleared, they begin tackling non-priority routes.  Click here to view priority map.

To make the most of the available resources, our priority locations for snow and ice removal are:

  • Bus routes
  • Emergency access routes (including Peace Arch Hospital)
  • Major roads

Barricades are also set up to stop traffic from entering roads which become dangerous in inclement weather, such as steep hills like Oxford Street.
