[ARCHIVED] Have you registered for the Great British Columbia ShakeOut?

ShakeOutBC

On October 19, take part in Canada’s largest earthquake drill. At exactly 10:19 a.m., participants from across the province will practice how to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” during the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill.

More than 3,000 earthquakes occur in British Columbia each year. Most are too small to be felt, but the risk of one big enough to cause significant damage is very real. Participating in ShakeOut BC is an effective way to better understand BC’s earthquake risk and how to prepare.

Last year, more than 700,000 British Columbian’s participated in the drill, joining the millions of people worldwide. Residents, organizations, and businesses are all encouraged to take part. The more people know about what to do during an earthquake, the better prepared our province will be to respond and recover. Register today at www.ShakeOutBC.ca

What to do:

If you feel an earthquake, take the following steps:

  • DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you).
  • Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and protect your head and neck.
  • HOLD ON until the shaking stops.
  • STAY THERE for 60 seconds, giving unstable objects time to settle.
