[ARCHIVED] Statement from the Mayor of White Rock

statement-from-the-mayor-of-white-rock

As you know, the storm on Thursday, December 20, 2018 has had a devastating impact on our community.

The Pier is extensively damaged along its length, not just at the break location, which means it will be closed indefinitely for at least a few months. Due to the extent of the damage that we can see, it will likely take us a few weeks to complete a full assessment and remediation plan.

The Promenade is closed certainly on the East Beach area. The area is covered with logs and is extensively damaged, especially in the vicinity of Cypress and Balsam crossings.

We are asking people to respect the barricades, signage and caution tape as they are there for your own good and safety. There are dangers down at our waterfront area, for example, some of the lamp standards may have been under washed by the waves and could come down at any point in time. There may also be live wires along the beach as well.  So, please do not go on the Promenade if it is blocked off.

On the streets of White Rock, we have a number of trees that have fallen and often bring wires down with them. Those wires are quite often live wires. As a precaution, let’s consider everything to be a live wire until BC Hydro has informed the public otherwise. So, please do not walk around, under, or beside blockades and wires as it is difficult to tell whether a wire is live or not. This is for your own good, the protection of the people in our community, our first responder and City crews.

As you travel, or visit, our community, please be careful. It’s Christmas time and we want everyone to have a safe and happy holiday season.

Thank you,

Darryl Walker
Mayor of the City of White Rock
