Johnston Road is partially closed to support Johnston Road Phase 2

Johnston Road will have one lane open for the duration of the project, which will take approximately 6 to 8 months to complete. Crews will be working Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. with extended hours during evenings and weekends, as needed.

July 25, 2024 Update

Johnston Rd. – Full Road Closure July 29 to 31
Johnston Road between Russell Ave. and Thrift Ave. will be fully closed from Monday, July 29 to Wednesday, July 31 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. to connect nearby buildings and storm drainage to newly constructed infrastructure. The southbound lane will reopen each evening after construction hours. Traffic control personnel will be on site to assist drivers and detours will be in place.

Johnston Rd. - East Sidewalk Removal
Starting Monday July 22, the east sidewalk along Johnston Rd from Russell Ave to Thrift Ave will be removed and temporarily replaced with gravel for ongoing construction. Businesses will remain open during regular business hours and temporary ramps will be placed for additional accessibility.

In addition, on Sunday, July 28, BC Hydro will be working on their infrastructure under the east sidewalk at 1490 Johnston Road. Sunday work has been chosen to minimize impact to fronting businesses as a result of this work. Pedestrian detours will be place and no conflict with the Sunday Farmers Market is expected.

Coffee Shop Chat
A fourth coffee shop chat will be held at the White Rock Community Center on August 16 from 9 to 10 a.m. City staff will be present to discuss the project progress and answer any questions that residents and business owners have.  Link for registration will be posted soon.

Bus Routes
The following bus routes have detours in place: 321, 345, 350, 351, 354, 362, 363, and 531. Visit
translink.ca for more information on bus detours.

Staff will continue to post project updates when available.

Business will remain open during construction

Shop local! Businesses are open during construction. While we work to enhance our infrastructure, we encourage everyone to show support for our local businesses. By choosing to shop local, we can ensure the continued success of our community and keep the local economy strong.

Construction management strategies include:

  • Maintaining clear and well-marked sidewalk access to businesses, along with directional signage
  • Providing free parking in the vicinity to encourage patronage
  • Seeking additional input and ideas from business owners and residents
