The City will privatize commercial and multifamily recycling and garbage collection in White Rock after reviewing options from White Rock’s Solid Waste Review Report in late 2014.
Many municipalities already offer private service for the garbage, recycling and organics pick up. It is a fair and equitable system for our businesses will be charged by weight rather than the assessed value of their property. Based on a user-fee system as well as new regulations and Metro Vancouver targets, it will not be feasible for the City to continue operating our commercial and multifamily side of the service.
"We appreciate that this will be a significant change for our businesses and multifamily residents," said Tracey Arthur, acting Chief Administrative Officer. “The City is working on a transition plan to help those affected along with engaging with community partners and will identify a date when the changes will come into effect.”
As an exploratory measure, the City will also issue a request for proposal on contracting out single-family home collection to review current operating costs and service and how it compares to the private sector.
