Transport Canada clarifies orders on train whistles
The City of White Rock hosted a Community Dialogue Session on Rail Safety and Dangerous Goods on July 7, 2014. The Dialogue followed recent orders by Transport Canada for repetitive whistling blasts from dawn to dusk. White Rock residents attended the Dialogue and voiced their concerns regarding apparent confusion with respect to the orders.
On July 9, 2014, Transport Canada revoked and replaced the order with a new order that clearly defines effective hours on repetitive whistling from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. rather than dawn to dusk. The Order will remain in effect until increased safety measures are implemented by Burlington Northern Sante Fe (BNSF) and/or the City.
The City of White Rock remains committed to improving rail safety issues on the waterfront. Scheduled meetings between the City of White Rock, Transport Canada, and BNSF are taking place this month to discuss short and long term measures to improve safety in this area.
