City of White Rock Mayor Megan Knight and council officially opened the Pier Accessibility Mat in a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday morning. The mat now stretches along one side of the iconic pier, creating an even layer on the wood planks.
“The City of White Rock is proud to unveil the new Pier Accessibility Mat, a project that represents our commitment to ensuring that everyone, regardless of their mobility, can experience the joy and beauty of our pier,” said Mayor Megan Knight. “I would also like to express my gratitude to the city staff for fast-tracking the installation of this mat. It’s wonderful that it was completed before the end of summer, allowing everyone to enjoy it.”
Quick Facts:
- This same mat is commonly used across the West Coast and is the same one used on the Santa Monica Pier
- The preliminary numbers for buying the mat and its installation cost around $100,000, which is under budget
- The mat was made possible due to a $25,000 grant from SPARC BC, a donation of $5,750 from the Self Advocates of Semiahmoo, and a donation of $2,000 from the Soroptimists International of White Rock
