Beginning February 1, an emergency daytime warming centre will be ready to operate on sub-zero temperature days in White Rock. The centre will be located in a modular building in the Centennial Park parking lot and can accommodate up to 30 people needing shelter during extreme cold weather events.
The centre will be operated by trained staff from Engaged Community of Canada Society (ECCS), a local not-for-profit society whose mandate is addressing systemic gaps affecting underserved communities related to complex health, social, and economic challenges. It will open on days in conjunction with the nearby emergency overnight shelter at Mount Olive Lutheran Church. Funding is being shared equally by the City of White Rock and the City of Surrey.
